Lava crosses Highway 137 near Four Corners

A lava flow crossed Highway 137 south of the “Four Corners” intersection, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

The crossing occurring after about two days of evacuations in the area, where there are up to 500 homes. Those structures are now isolated.

Civil Defense announced the crossing at 9:45 a.m. The intersection, informally known as Four Corners, is where highways 132 and 137 meet Government Beach Road.

There is no access to Kapoho, Vacationalnd, Highway 132 and Highway 137.

Government Beach Road between Kahakai Boulevard and Cinder Road is open to Waa Waa and Papaya Farms Road to residents only. There is no curfew.

Shelters are open at the Pahoa Community Center and Keaau Armory.
